The Cite extension allows a user to create references as footnotes on a page. It adds two parser hooks to MediaWiki, <ref> and <references />; these operate together to add citations to pages. [1]

  • Place <ref></ref> tags at the end of the sentence, where your citation is located.
  • The <references /> tag inserts the text of all the citations which have defined in <ref> tags up to that point in the page.

Multiple uses of the same footnote

  • To give a unique identifier, use <ref name="name"></ref> tags. [2]
  • Then use the <ref name="name" /> tag to insert all citations with the ref name "name". [1]
